May 2019: A Perspective from the Senate.
Guest Speakers: Sen. Dick Harpootlian and Sen. Katrina Shealy
Summary:
The Chamber's May Issues Forum featured Senator Dick Harpootlian (District 20) and Senator Katrina Shealy (District 72) discussing legislation and critical issues they are working on during this legislative session. Issues receiving a great deal of attention include teacher pay; the process by which the Governor appoints candidates to run Cabinet agencies; and the continued unintended consequences of Act 388. The creation of the Military and Veterans Affairs Cabinet is perceived as a positive step for unifying the state's military efforts.
Throughout the year, you can expect the Columbia Chamber to:
- Continue to work with members of the State Legislature on bills that mirror our Public Policy Agenda and work to enhance the business and military community
- Seek input from Chamber Partners to ensure the business voice is represented
- Work through the Issues Forum, the Public Policy Committee and the Executive Board to focus attention on issues identified in the 2019 Public Policy Agenda-- the cost of doing business, education and workforce, and support for the military
