"We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate." – Thomas Jefferson

Over the next few weeks, our community will have the opportunity to demonstrate our right and responsibility to vote in a series of upcoming local elections. The City Council, Mayoral, and Richland County School District One elections all have the potential to change the trajectory our community is heading and I strongly encourage you to learn about the candidates and issues at stake.

The importance of voting cannot be overstated, especially in local elections such as these. It is the easiest way to voice your opinion on the important decisions that will affect your day-to-day life. The upcoming special election for Richland County School District One's board position, in particular, provides a unique chance for families and residents to play an active role in electing leaders who will have our children's best interests in mind.

The City Council and Mayoral elections provide additional opportunities to bring in new leadership and fresh ideas. While Columbia continues to grow, there are still steps that need to be taken to help our community reach its full potential.

The City of Columbia's recent tax study demonstrated how our current policies have led to Columbia having the highest cost of doing business in the state of South Carolina. At the same time, Richland County has experienced the slowest median household income growth in the state over the past decade, lagging behind nearly every other South Carolina county.

We need strong leadership to help lay the foundation for years to come. It is important that we elect leaders who are willing to work as a team to find common ground on the issues that matter most.

These elections represent a critical turning point for our community. This is your chance to stand for integrity and accountability. Your vote matters and I encourage you to use your power wisely on election day.

Take care,
